Tomorrow, Thursday 18 May, is UK publication day for THIS WAS A MAN in paperback. When I was a child, the paperback used to outsell the hardback 5 to 1, because retailers weren’t allowed to discount the jacket price, or offer deals. But now, while the hardback jacket price was £20, the high street shops and supermarkets were selling it at £9.99, so many of my readers decided not to wait. This Was a Man paperback is £7.99, but I doubt there will be many retailers selling it at full price. In fact books are better value than they were 30 years ago. Still, an author is always excited on publication day, and it will be no different for me tomorrow.
